A Finn in space!

Timothy L. Kopra (1963) is a United States Army Colonel and a NASA astronaut. And a Finn – well 3rd generation Finn, but we Finns think of him as “our boy in space – a Sisunaut”. He is currently aboard the International Space Station for a tour of duty as a flight engineer for Expedition 20.

His grandfather was born in Karelia, Eastern Finland. He left Finland in 1910 and moved to the USA. Timothy’s father spoke Finnish, but unfortunately Timothy himself never learnt the language.

His fame has kick started a new trend in trying to find relatives abroad – hoping to come across someone famous, of course. Everyone named “Kopra” claims to be a relative of Timothy. I suppose many of them are, perhaps third cousins to his grandfather!
